Play Streets

Find out about play streets and how you can get involved

What is a play street?

Play streets (or ‘playing out’ sessions) are neighbour-led short road closures, creating a safe space for children to play freely together on their doorstep. They usually involve closing a street to through traffic for a couple of hours on a pre-arranged date, and inviting children to come out and play!

Why are play streets a good idea?

Playing out gives children space and freedom to get exercise outdoors, play freely, gain independence and skills, and make new friends close to home. Play streets are also a good way to build community links.

What does it involve?

Organising a play street should be a straightforward process. We would recommend finding some neighbours who are happy to join you in leading the organisation and then asking around on your street to find out who might be interested. Once you have a date in mind, complete the events form on the council website https://grantsandevents.worcester.gov.uk/event/

Can people still get to their homes or businesses?

Although the street will be closed to through traffic, residents will still be allowed vehicle access during the Play Street session. When entering or leaving the Play Street, drivers should go very slowly (walking pace) and be aware that there may be children and families around. Stewards at the entry and exit points will remind drivers about going slowly and ask children and families to clear the area if needed.

Read about the experience of setting up a play street

Rachel, a resident who lives in Arboretum, was keen to find ways to support her children to play in their own neighbourhood. Having experienced play streets in London and Bristol, Rachel decided she would set up a play street in her road. Read her story here.

If you are interested in setting up your own play street, Play Worcester are here to offer support.

“When they can play on their streets, children also act as catalysts for community, moving within and between private and public spaces”
