Paul and Play Worcester

Why are you involved with Play Worcester?

What are your favourite play memories from childhood?

What are your favourite play memories from childhood?

I became involved with Play Worcester through my work & Community Engagement, as we see ‘Play’ as an important part of children’s / young peoples development, as it allows them to learn life skills that will stay with them for life, while having fun. Play as a child also allows you to build new friendships & bonds that can often last a lifetime.

Being part of play initiatives was also a good fit with my background in sports coaching.

As a child we were never in & we were encouraged to be outside whenever possible & like many children of my generation we often only ever returned home at meal times, or when the street lights came on.

I have many fond childhood memories, most of which involved being out with my mates & the activities would often be seasonal, playing football on the local recreation ground with jumpers as goal posts, cricket in the Summer.

Most of the Summer holidays was spent at Droitwich lido, indoor in the winter,  but there was also early morning fishing trips to the local canal, den building in the local woods & playing street games, including marbles, spot light, kerbie, etc.

Rain or shine, there was always something going on.

What would you do to make Worcester more playful?

What would you do to make Worcester more playful?

Worcester has great potential for play opportunities with its open spaces, etc. & we are always looking for new ideas to make Worcester a more playful city & during most school holidays we put on some sort of activities on the local estates, but there is always plenty more that can be done & by getting more people & organisations involved we can hopefully give the children / families of this generation the opportunities to create their own childhood memories by improving opportunities & facilities.

Play isn’t about money, it is often about imagination, desire & opportunity, so together we can hopefully make Worcester a child friendly & more playful city.
